Le Shuttle (Eurotunnel) is the fastest way across the Channel at 35 minutes, but rarely the cheapest. Here is what a car crossing actually costs in 2026 — and how it compares with the Calais–Dover ferry.
| Ticket type | Price (car, single) | Change booking | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard Saver cheapest | £99–119 (early) | For a fee | Early bookers with fixed dates |
| Standard | £140–190 | For a fee | Standard booking |
| Standard (peak) | £180–250 | For a fee | July/August, holidays |
| FlexiPlus priciest | £250–300 | Free, anytime | Business, open plans |
Prices are per car (up to 9 people), one way. Booking early and travelling off-peak (Tue–Thu, before 7am or after 8pm) makes the biggest difference.
Both cross the Channel. The tunnel is faster; the ferry is usually cheaper and far more comfortable. Quick comparison for a car with two adults:
| Time | Price (2 adults + car) | On board | Motorhome height | Verdict | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 🚂 Le Shuttle | 35 min | £99–300 | Stay in your car | Max 2.55 m height | Faster, no sea air |
| ⛴ Calais–Dover ferry | 90 min | from £55 / person | Restaurant, bar, deck | No height limit | Cheaper, more comfort |
💡 For most leisure travellers the ferry wins on price and comfort; the tunnel wins on speed. Motorhomes over 2.55 m can only use the ferry.
